Abstract

The presentation will provide an overview of international efforts working to define standards and interoperability profiles that promise to deliver medical device interoperability, both technical and semantic, from the sensor to the HER, from the bedroom to the OR and between Countries. The presentation also covers the rapid convergence of Clinical Engineering and healthcare IT, which has resulted in the creation of various organizations and resulted in the updated regulatory definition of medical devices to include “stand-alone software”, only to beg the question about when these applications are actually classified as devices vs healthcare applications. Integration of systems is presenting unique integration and management issues that require the application of life-cycle based risk management.
