Despite more than twenty-five years of research establishing the antidepressant efficacy and safety of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), there remains uncertainty about the depth and breadth of this evidence base resulting in confusion as to where rTMS fits in the therapeutic armamentarium in the management of patients with mood disorders. This presentation will review the evidence supporting the use if rTMS: how it compares to placebo stimulation and alternative treatment options for patients with treatment resistant depression.
